Sophie Haulman is from Wilmington, North Carolina. She received her BFA (2019) in Sculpture + Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University. She primarily works in ceramics and mixed media sculpture, taking inspiration from her experiences as a dancer, struggling with disordered eating, and finding passion in visual and sensual preoccupation with materials. Her work explores the sensuality of space and the body through material-based experimentation, tactile methods of surface finishing, and formal explorations in the third dimension. These studies elicit qualities of attraction through touch and sensation while being restricted to a purely visual and spatial experience. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
